2022 Can Am Renegade X XC 1000R and X MR 1000R are two of the highest-performance 4×4 sports ATVs available today, and probably of all ATVs.
Without the Polaris Scrambler 1000 for 2022, the Renegade 1000s holds the title of being the hardest-hitting, best-handling, and most-mud-resistant machine money can buy without a utility designation.
The Can-Am Renegade X XC 1000R is the best-handling 4WD ATV on sale today.
The Fox 1.5 Podium RC2’s suspension is as good as it gets, and the low center of gravity means the Renegade will be pretty hard for anyone to keep up with on any trail.
ATR’s ITP Holeshot tires may be reminiscent of dirt track racing of yore, but they’re more than just the job of tackling the massive power that Rotax spews out.
Even the X MR 1000R handles well. Even though the Fox 1.5 Podium QS3 shocks are meant to control tire undulation in the mud, the suspension is still more than happy in corners.
The big limitation here is the ITP Cryptid tires, which are best suited for stirring dirt. Nonetheless, the X MR 1000R will surprise anyone who jumps into a chair with its ability to rip up trails.
2022 Can Am Renegade Review
Our most powerful ATV! The new 91-hp Renegade X MR 1000R is built strong to ride fast & long through the mud.
With the next-generation suspension and the Visco-4Lok Front Differential, the game really changes.
All Renegade 1000 models feature dual 214mm discs with dual-piston calipers at the front and single 214mm discs with dual-piston calipers at the rear.
That’s enough to carry class 850 Renegades and only enough for 1000, but we doubt anyone would care; they would be too happy to laugh at the power of 1,000cc.
Visco-4Lok is now part of the X MR package.

Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
You want power? Because the Renegade 1000 has power. As far as performance goes, this is the highlight. At 91 hp, the 976cc Rotax V-twin engine is a monster waiting to be unleashed with your right thumb.
It pulls hard at any speed and is not suitable for beginners or beginners. This, in other words, was very cruel. When it comes to 4WD ATVs, there’s no quicker way to get down a trail or through the mud.
Transmission duties come via Can-Am continuously variable transmission.
This allows the rider to make ideal use of the Rotax class 1,000 powerplant and is always up for the task of making the rider depending on the handlebars for the good life.
High, low, neutral, reverse and parking gears are part of the package.
2022 Can Am Renegade Electronic
The Renegade 1000 has many standard technologies. The 4.5-inch digital display provides the driver with a speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip- and hour meters, gear position indicator, 4WD indicator, temperature, engine lights, electronic fuel gauge, and clock. T
he measuring console houses a standard DC outlet and 15-amp connector. Can-Am’s RF Digitally Encoded Security System (DESS) keeps would-be thieves honest, and the X XC comes with a cable for the winch while the X MR comes with a standard 3,500-pound winch.
Illumination through four 60-watt projector headlamps and taillights/brake lights lets these riders know the movement of the Renegade.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
Ergonomics is a mixed bag. The Renegade is certainly comfortable but lacks the all-day comfort of its main rival, the Polaris Scrambler.
The Renegade puts performance at the top of its list whereas the Scrambler focuses more on the niceties of the rider.
That said, the only real downside here is the seat width, which might be a bit wide for some riders.
We love the handlebar placement on the Renegade lineup and how much it feels like a sports ATV, and this is directly reflected in the absence of a front rack. It gives you an excellent view of the trail ahead.
The rear rack, or at least one, is small but can carry 35 pounds. It’s not much, but it should be more than enough for their cooler, gear bag, or ego overpowered by the Renegade 1000.
2022 Can Am Renegade Payload / Towing
All Renegade 1000 models weigh 1,300 pounds. For this performance engine, it’s more than adequate; we highly doubt anyone would use Renegade for real work.

2022 Can Am Renegade Price
Both Renegades are absolute winners, and you can’t go wrong either. It’s just a matter of having an honest conversation with yourself and deciding whether you prioritize mud or trail performance.
We’d go with the Can-Am X XC 1000R, as it’s always easy to add mud tires, but if you’re planning on adding a snorkel, then the X MR is a fantastic starting point.
