2022 Can Am Commander: New Can-Am Commander Special Review

Posted on

2022 Can Am Commander It used to be enough for utility-focused side-by-side to dedicate most of their focus to a yard or farm work, and have enough passion and ability to let their hair fall a little on the weekends. The Can-Am Commander is an example of that ethos, offering more than adequate capabilities as a recreational vehicle, but with a primary focus on the job site.

But the world is moving fast, for 2022 Can-Am is aiming clearly and decisively at competitors like the Yamaha Wolverine RMAX. When the all-new RMAX broke last year’s cover, it set a new precedent for work and leisure rigs, and the press, including us, fell head over heels.

2022 Can Am Commander Review

The 2022 Can-Am Commander XT-P takes the top spot in the company’s side-by-side sports utility offering, with a long list of upgrades to the base model and 100 horsepower from the 976cc v-twin.

2022 Can Am Commander

More suspension travel than DPS Commander base, aluminum wheels, roof panels, up to 15 inches of suspension travel, curved A-arm.

The 700 model matches less suspension travel and horsepower, but saves $4,200 over the 2022 Can Am Commander Xt 1000R.

The Can-Am Commander XT and XT-P take the Commander line into the premium realm side by side, offering cosmetic and functional features that go far beyond the base model. Despite the improved ride and performance, they maintain their hard work ethic.

With more suspension travel, bumpers, roof panels, a 4,500-pound winch, and aluminum alloy wheels, the XT and XT-P look and feel more premium than the base models. The XT-P adds Fox suspension, 15-inch alloy wheels, and 30-inch XPS Hammer Force tires to the mix, adding functionality and almost aftermarket flare that’s rare in side-by-side stock.

2022 Can Am Commander Max XTP

The base XT is available in either 1,000cc or 650cc guises, but the Max and XT-P are only 1,000cc.

2022 Can Am Commander XTP Max

The 2022 Can-Am Commander Max XT-P and its two-door stablemate have a spec sheet showing Can-Am watching closely. On the XT-P model, you get Fox Podium QS3 compression adjustable remote reservoir shock absorbers with 14 inches of travel at all four corners, 15-inch color-contrast cast aluminum beadlock wheels, 30-inch XPS Hammer Force tires, 4,500 pound winch tires, and Smart-Lok locking front differential from Can-Am.

2022 Can Am Commander

To help you deal with rock, root or particularly bad sticks, the Commander Max XT-P has curved A-arms front and rear.

Pushing it all together is the 100 hp, 976cc Rotax V-twin running through the Can-Am Fast Response System continuously variable transmission. Can-Am has also ditched hillside control and Sport and Eco throttle modes in the Commander Max XT-P to make things as rowdy or as reasonable as you want them to be.

But if you need him to pull his load around the farm, Commander Max XT-P will be happy to help. The bed is rated for 600 pounds, while the entire rig has a payload capacity of 1,280 pounds. At the rear, there is a 2-inch automotive-style receiver, and the rig can be towed up to 2,000 pounds. It may look like a trophy truck, but it sacrifices very little when it comes to doing the actual work.

The XT-P was also equipped with many accessories that many buyers later added, such as panoramic rearview mirrors and LED headlights. The latter may seem trivial, but far too many rigs are trying to settle for factory halogens, and LEDs are a huge safety feature if you get caught after dark.

2022 Can Am Commander Max Xt

At even 2,000 pounds, the Commander Max XT-P isn’t what you’d call light, but neither is the Yamaha, and we haven’t complained about its weight. At $24,699 before accessories, it costs $700 over a similar RMAX.

2022 Can Am Commander XT 700 Top Speed

The Commander XT 700 gets a 52 hp 650cc Rotax engine mounted to the aging Can-Am PDrive CVT with engine braking and electronic belt protection.

Every other model gets a 100 hp, 976cc Rotax V-twin powered by a CVT Quick Response System featuring high airflow vents, electronic belt protection, and extra-low gear.

The A-arm that curves across the board and another inch of suspension running over the base of the Commander means the XT and XT-P are much more stable off-road. The standard XT is matched by dual cylinder gas shock absorbers at all four corners that hold the 14-inch wheels and tires wobbled. It’s no slouch, but the XT-P makes it look very simple, with Fox suspension and 30-inch front and rear tires.

With better rolling stock and shocks, the XT-P should handle the league better than a standard rig.

Across the range are 220mm discs clamped by two-piston calipers at all four corners.

2022 Can Am Commander 4 Seater

The cushioned seat is excellently cushioned and the three-point seat belt keeps passengers comfortable and in place. The seats get contrast stitching in the XT-P trim. The LCD screen jumps to 7.6 inches on the XT and XT-P and gets a keypad. It has a speedometer and tachometer, odometer, trip meter, hour meter, driving mode indicator, diff-lock indicator, diagnostic warning and temperature reading.

2022 Can Am Commander

At the back, the bed can carry 600 pounds and there’s a 2-inch automotive-style hitch receiver.

The bed is rated to carry 600 pounds, and Can-Am claims the Commander can pull 2,000 pounds.

2022 Can Am Commander Price

If you can’t afford the nearly $20,000 tithe for the cheapest 1,000cc model, you’re stuck with the Can Am Commander XT 700, which is a very good rig for what it is. It won’t win any races, but it will definitely keep you entertained.

If you can afford the extra cash for a bigger machine, our choice is to go with the XT-P. It has much nicer Fox suspension than the base XT, and 30-inch tires on all four corners save you from having to go straight to the aftermarket. Nearly $23,000 is nothing, but it also means you won’t have much customization to do.
