2022 Can Am Defender Available in three-seater or six-seater (Max) configurations, the Defender Limited is the ultimate luxury trim for those who want to feel comfortable when working outdoors. The limited model comes with a full hard roof with interior dome liners and lights, a hermetically sealed cab with open doors, power windows, and a glass windshield that tilts (in three positions), and more.
The Limited builds on amenities that make the Defender more livable in extreme weather, and also offers passengers a reprieve from the outside elements, keeping the interior cleaner when the cabin is closed.
- Fully sealed cab, heating and air conditioning, powerful engine, great ride—as far as utility UTVs go, this one definitely checks all the boxes.
- No factory audio and no upgraded surprise options for Defender Limited.
- For those in harsh climates, the work must go on. The Defender Limited offers a hermetically sealed cab with roll-up windows and a factory HVAC system.
With onboard heating and air conditioning, passengers can sail very comfortably. However, the added perks come with a penalty, as the Limited model has a payload rating that is 300–400 pounds lower than lower-trim models. However, the increased convenience is more than worth the price of admission.
There’s nothing new for ’22 when it comes to Defender Limited and Defender Max Limited. The trim gets the ultimate HD10 engine, making 82 hp and 69 pound-feet of torque. The other two Defender machines saw changes this year, but the HD10 did not.
Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Defender Limited model uses the ultimate HD10 Rotax V-twin. It makes 82 hp and 69 pound-feet of torque from its 976cc displacement. This puts it in stiff competition with NorthStar’s Polaris Ranger XP 1000, which also has 82 hp from an engine of the same size. Note that the AC system will also cause some parasitic resistance and power loss during use, so sporty driving is best done with the AC off.
The Defender Limited uses a belt-driven CVT transmission to deliver power to the ground. An electronically controlled 4WD system comes standard, and offers a grass mode for lighting up soft surfaces. The Limited model gets the basic Can-Am Visco-Lok front differential, unlike the X MR model which gets the high-end Smart-Lok differential.
Handling
The Defender Limited model uses 27-inch Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires and dual tube, gas-fueled shock absorbers. With 10 inches of suspension travel available from both ends, the Defender does well for its intended purpose. The cab adds an extra layer of insulation and comfort to the Defender’s ride, but also reduces its handling prowess slightly.
Brake
Each corner gets 220mm discs, with dual-piston calipers at the front and single-piston (three-seat) or dual-piston (Max) calipers at the rear.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
The full door of Defender Limited opens in a suicidal manner, making entry and exit easy. The push-button-operated window is also a neat feature. The adorable toolbox that mounts to the Defender’s dashboard is a great addition, and can now be locked in the cab for added security. The ability to leave an HVAC system running while you work means a lot to some, and we can see why. Getting a reprieve from the heat on 100-degree (and hotter) days is a nice feature.
The Max model remains the master of storage, with a swing seat that allows easy access to a large floor pan that can now be closed with doors at both ends. When it comes to carrying cargo, the Defender Max Limited is king, as long as it doesn’t exceed the 1,300 pound payload limit.
Payload / Towing
The three-seat Defender Limited model has a 1,000 pound bed capacity, a maximum tow rating of 2,500 pounds, and a payload limit of 1,200 pounds. The six-seat Defender Max Limited model has a bed capacity of 1,000 pounds, a maximum tow rating of 2,500 pounds, and a payload limit of 1,300 pounds. The California model has a 600 pound bed capacity.
Electronic
Neither model has a fancy electronics suite, but they do come with an enhanced 7.6-inch Can-Am digital display with keypad. It handles all standard vehicle instrumentation tasks. The HVAC system also has an automatic climate control function.
